A sigil of the depths. Of the vast and the untameable, the things that cannot be fully known. The Kraken does not ask permission, and neither, when it finds its way onto you, do you.

Crafted in 100% recycled sterling silver, the Kraken hoops are made to be worn every day, but still feel like something pulled from an older world.

On the Kraken

The word Kraken is thought to come from Old Norse, kraki, meaning a crooked or twisted tree. It was written about in the 12th century by King Sverre of Norway, and later by the Danish bishop Erik Pontoppidan in 1752, who treated the creature not simply as myth, but as natural history. He described it as living in the deep waters between Norway and Greenland.

Pontoppidan also recorded that fishermen would sometimes follow the Kraken rather than flee from it, because wherever it rose, vast shoals of fish came up from the depths with it. The danger and the abundance were part of the same thing.

In older Norse stories, a creature called the Hafgufa, “the Sea-Reek”, is thought to be one of its predecessors. It was said to be so huge that sailors mistook it for an island, sometimes landing on its back before it sank beneath them.

The Kraken was not evil in the way later sea monsters often became. It was stranger than that: ancient, indifferent, and following its own course.
